How to Make Makeup Last Longer

Achieving a perfect makeup application is one thing. But making sure it lasts the entire day -- that’s the real key to applying makeup successfully.

Students in makeup classes learn that the problems that make makeup fade or “melt” off our faces after only a few short hours aren’t always caused by the makeup itself. In fact, these problems often arise from mistakes we make during the application process. If you’ve noticed that your makeup simply isn’t staying put as long as you’d like, try the following tips to help make makeup stay in its place.

Tips and Tricks to Make Makeup Stay

Compatibility Check

We all know that oil and water don’t mix, yet many of us are unknowingly using a combination of oil and water-based products on our faces each day. Check labels carefully and only use products together that are similar in composition.

The Importance of Primer

Using a primer beneath your foundation and eye shadow is critical if you want to make makeup last longer. Primer will not only make makeup look flawless, but it also creates a protective base that helps keep makeup in its place.

Setting with Powder

Once you’ve applied your makeup, don’t forget to set it in place with loose, translucent powder. Applying loose powder reduces shine and will help make makeup last as long as possible.

Keep it Light

Piling products onto your face will not only prevent your makeup from looking natural, but it will cause it to wear away much more quickly. For best results, use a light touch when applying makeup and keep products to a minimum. Instead of using a moisturizer, primer and a foundation, for example, ditch the moisturizer and use only a hydrating primer.
