Beautician Career

Few careers offer the fun, fast-paced and creative atmosphere as that of a beautician. These beauty professionals work in beauty shops and salons providing hairstyling and beauty services to clients. These services may include haircuts, hair coloring, makeup applications, manicures and facials. A beautician may also consult with her clients to help them determine the best hair styling or makeup options for them — particularly if the style is being done for a special event, such as a wedding or photo session.

All states require professionals in the beautician career field to be licensed, meaning that you’ll need to enroll in a licensed cosmetology program and pass a licensing examination prior to finding employment. To ensure that your educational hours meet your state’s requirements, you must attend a school that is licensed by the state. Even better, is a school that is accredited by one of the top accrediting bodies, as this ensures the school meets stringent guidelines regarding their educational curriculum.

Beautician Career Paths

Once you’ve graduated from cosmetology school and earned your licensure, you’ll be ready to begin your beautician career. Many beautician professionals begin their careers in salons and spas where they’re able to perfect their skills and develop confidence in their abilities. From there, your career as a beautician may take you into education as a beauty instructor or program director; into salon ownership or management; or into the cosmetics industry. For beauticians interested in focusing on makeup, exciting careers in the entertainment and fashion industries are also possible.

Regardless of where you want your beautician career to go, you can look forward to job flexibility and plenty of options for full-time, part-time and self employment. This is a perk many aspiring beautician professionals look forward to, as it gives them the ability to design their careers around their life and family plans.
