BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL NAIL TECHNICIAN
Have you always taken obsessively good care of your nails, taking the time to tend to every little chip or crack? Does your nail file take up a permanent spot of valuable real estate in your teeny tiny “going out dancing” clutch purse? Attending a nail technician school may be the perfect career choice for you! According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for manicurists and pedicurists is expected to grow 17% by the year 2020. Sounds pretty great right? But what exactly will you learn while attending a nail technician school? “Natural and artificial nail care,” said Jolie Academy instructor Cindy Pane.
OK so you want to be a professional nail technician…now what? Here’s what Pane suggests:
“(The first step) is to enroll in a licensed nail technician school and complete the required hours,” said Pane. “(The next step is to) pass the state’s test to be licensed in that state.”
Doing a little bit of homework before you start attending school can go a long way towards ensuring you choose the right place for you. Check out your state’s requirements for becoming a certified nail technician and see what nail technician schools meet those requirements.
It’s also important not to forget about practicality; after all, convenience is important if you are going to meet your attendance, grades and hours requirements. “Look at travel time, the length of the program, curriculum content and what obstacles you could potentially have while enrolled,” said Pane. “(Then) check on funding, look at curriculums and sit in classes.” By observing the class atmosphere and watching how the instructors interact with their students, you will get a much better idea if the nail technician school is a good fit.
Do you have a creative flair that you want to express through a career as a professional nail technician? Check that the nail technician school also offers coursework in nail design and air brushing. Your future clients will appreciate not only your passion for art but your expertise in producing it! The best nail technician schools will have a lot of hands-on activities to help you learn everything from basic manicure work to complex nail art. But what’s the most important part of any nail technician school you are considering? Passion! Choose a school where the instructors and students share your passion for nail care.
Once you have narrowed down your search to the final few contenders, choose your school by looking at their statistics. “Check rates for grad, boards and placement,” said Pane. And what else can you do to make sure you pass your licensing test? “Practice, Practice, practice,” she said.
