Become a Nursing Assistant

Nursing assistants work alongside doctors and nurses in healthcare facilities where they provide direct, one-on-one care to patients. From helping patients get dressed to providing meal-time support, nursing assistants play a critical role in making sure that the basic, everyday needs of patients are met. Not only does this ensure that patients are as comfortable as possible, but it ensures that nurses and doctors are better able to focus on healing and improving the overall health of their patients.

Becoming a Nursing Assistant

Nursing assistant training programs provide students with a comprehensive education through classroom lectures and hands-on clinical work. Through this training, students working towards becoming a nursing assistant will receive a thorough education in:

  • The roles and responsibilities of a nursing assistant
  • Basic life saving measures, such as CPR
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Medical Terminology
  • Basic care procedures such as back rubs, skin care, dressing wounds and hair care
  • Checking vital signs
  • The basics of bed making
  • Admission and discharge procedures
  • Care of clients with specific diseases, such as Diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
  • Hospice care

In addition to this classroom and clinical experience, students in nursing assistant training programs will also participate in an externship at a local healthcare facility. Here, they’ll work towards becoming a nursing assistant as they work under the guidance of a professional in an actual hospital, nursing home or long-term care facility. This component of the nursing assistant training program helps students see the real-world application of their classroom training, as well as provides students with an opportunity to develop their communication skills and confidence when working with patients.

Students who successfully complete their nursing assistant education will be eligible to sit for a certification exam and earn their professional credentials, credentials that will provide them with a competitive edge when applying for their first jobs after graduation.
