From safety to blood collection techniques, students in phlebotomy school will participate in a variety of learning activities to prepare them for rewarding careers in the allied health field. Much of this training will be hands-on in nature, ensuring students have the skills and knowledge required to perform phlebotomy successfully.
At the Jolie phlebotomy school, students will begin their training by learning the basics of phlebotomy, which includes classroom instruction in professional ethics, medical terminology and human biology. Learning How to Perform Venipuncture
Throughout the phlebotomy school program, each student must perform a number of successful venipunctures to ensure they’re well prepared for the national licensing exam after graduation. Patient safety and quality assurance are very important throughout this process, with students developing a working knowledge of:
- Venous and capillary blood collection
- Specialized collection equipment
- Specialized collection techniques
- Vein selection
- Applying a tourniquet
- Specimen transport and processing
In the school lab, students will learn how to determine the best blood collection method based on a patient’s age and physical characteristics, for example. This may include using a lancet to collect blood from an infant, as well as selecting a needle gauge that will cause the least amount of discomfort.
At the conclusion of the phlebotomy school program, students should have the skills and confidence necessary to work in the field as effective phlebotomists. These professionals play an important role in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic labs and other medical facilities by taking lab specimens as requested by an attending physician. These samples are then used in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of wide range of conditions, from high cholesterol to diabetes to autoimmune disorders.
